Prep Your Yard for Summer. No matter where you live, summer can wreak havoc on your landscaping. The good news? There are steps you can take now to prepare your lawn and plants for the harsh sun and heat that’s just around the corner.
- Aerate your lawn. Aeration involves creating holes in the soil in order to allow water, oxygen, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the ground nearer the roots. If you have cool-season grass, like bluegrass or ryegrass, wait and aerate until autumn. But if you live in a climate where warm-season grasses thrive, aerate in the spring.
- Prune and remove. Plants will have to work harder to retain water as temperatures rise, so prune back plants and shrubs that bloom in the spring. You should also remove any excess thatch from your lawn, which will make it easier for sunlight to reach the grass.
- Fertilize your grass. The type and timing of fertilizing will depend on the type of grass you have, but giving your lawn a boost before the summer heat truly sets in will help keep it healthy throughout the season.
- Plant some perennials. Late spring is the perfect time to plant perennials that will grow all summer long — and maybe return next year! You can opt for brightly colored flowers or kitchen herbs you can use when cooking.
In combination with a healthy watering schedule (keeping in mind local water restrictions), preparing your landscaping for summer will keep your outdoor spaces healthy and vibrant. Contact Realtor Tony Ciancanelli at tonyciancanelli.com
